Hi! I'm Laura Jane Williams, and I write the kind of rom-coms I desperately wanted to read but couldn't find on shelves - you know, the ones where the characters feel like actual humans you might meet at your local pub rather than perfect Instagram models who have their lives completely sorted. (Spoiler alert: none of us do!)
I never actually meant to become an author. Truth be told, I spent my twenties thinking I'd ruined my life after a devastating breakup led me to become a nun for six months. Yes, really! I lived in a spiritual commune in Italy, took a vow of celibacy, and wrote about the whole experience in my memoir "Becoming." Looking back, it was probably the best worst thing that ever happened to me because it kicked off my writing career in the most unexpected way.
These days, I'm known for writing contemporary romance that's equal parts heart and humor. My characters are gloriously messy, often anxious, and definitely overthinking everything (much like yours truly). I love writing about modern dating disasters, family dynamics that make you cringe-laugh, and the kind of love stories that feel both aspirational AND actually possible.
My latest book, "Enemies to Lovers," follows Flo Greenberg - a delightfully high-strung overachiever who ends up stuck on a Greek holiday with her brother's insufferably handsome best friend. It's got all my favorite tropes: forced proximity, enemies-to-lovers (obviously!), and that delicious slow burn that makes you want to throw the book across the room (in the best way possible).
When I'm not writing, you'll find me in London, probably drinking too much coffee and people-watching for character inspiration. I'm also a columnist for Red magazine and teach creative writing, because apparently, I just can't shut up about storytelling. My students will tell you I'm obsessed with the "meet-cute" and firmly believe that every great romance needs at least one mortifying moment that makes readers physically cringe.
Here's what you can expect from my books: - Characters who are perfectly imperfect (and proud of it!) - Dialogue that sounds like your actual friends talking - Awkward situations that'll make you grateful they're happening to someone else - Strong female friendships (because romance isn't just about the love interest) - And enough British humor to make you crave a cuppa
I write for anyone who's ever sent a catastrophically embarrassing text to the wrong person, showed up to a date with spinach in their teeth, or fallen for someone they absolutely shouldn't have. My characters make bad decisions, learn from them (eventually), and find love not despite their mess, but because of it.
The best part of this job? Connecting with readers who message me saying "Oh my god, I've TOTALLY done that!" or "I thought I was the only one who felt this way!" Because that's what I'm really writing about - the universal experience of being human and looking for love in a world where dating apps exist but romance isn't dead.
So if you're ready for stories that'll make you laugh out loud on public transport (sorry not sorry), cry into your wine glass, and believe in love again - even when your dating life feels like a dumpster fire - you're in the right place. Let's be friends! You can find me on Instagram sharing writing updates, book recommendations, and probably too many pictures of my coffee art attempts.
P.S. Yes, all my embarrassing dating stories eventually end up in my books. No, I won't tell you which ones are real. (Okay, maybe after a glass of wine...)
